Instructor: Zhonghe (Elena) Li
Zhonghe (Elena) Li is a multi-media artist who lives and works in Cambridge, MA. She started with watercolors and experimented with various media, including short films and animations. In the past 14 years, she has focused on the traditional Chinese art of papercutting, using a pair of scissors. In carrying on the tradition in a new setting, she has been trying to make the tradition relevant to contemporary art and issues. The motivation behind her work has been her love for nature’s diversity and her profound concern for species extinction, climate change, humanity’s role, and the resulting consequences on humanity’s future. Imbedded in the art of papercutting is the Taoist philosophy of interconnectivity and of achieving balance, whether among humans or between human beings and nature.
