This class is a great fit for anyone who wants an introduction to using clay off the wheel! We will focus on projects that use pinching, slabs, molds, and coils to establish a foundation of useful clay skills. Projects will include mugs, sculpted jars, slip-decoration, and an animal sculpture! The final week of class students will be given instruction on underglazes and glazes. Returning students or those who are moving into an intermediate skill level are welcome to return.
Gill Travers (they/them/theirs) is a RI based artist whose primary medium is ceramics. They received their BFA in ceramic art at Alfred University in 2019 and have been teaching handbuilding in RI since 2020. Gill is inspired by the form and function of flora, fauna, extinct taxa & fictional creatures. From these, they create new queer creatures that muddle & play with expectations of the viewer. Materially these queer creatures echo fossils, except they are rendered in full form, often feeding, growing or interacting with the environment. Gill often uses multiple kiln firings to create development in the ceramic creatures, where they are altered in expected & spontaneous ways through the melting and merging of glazes.
This class requires sitting or standing at a table that is 35 inches high and using hands to mold and form clay. This class may involve exposure to minimal levels of clay dust; proper PPE will be provided. For more accessibility information regarding this class, please email cbest@fullercraft.org.
