Introduction to Shibori and Indigo Workshop

Experience the surface design technique of shibori, and create unique patterns on fabric using the natural dye indigo. Shibori, or physical resist, has been a traditional pattern-making technique in Japan, India, Africa throughout history, and continues today. We will begin experimenting with Japanese approaches such as Kumo (binding), Ori-Nui (stitching), Itajime (clamping) and Arashi (pole wrapping). We will use these techniques, along with our own experiments to create our “bundles” and then place the cloth bundles in magical indigo dye. The…

Half-hull Model Making

Half hull models carved and used by ship and boat builders in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries to design, and describe to clients, the shape of, and likely success of a particular hull shape.
