Participants will learn a traditional wax resist method of decorating eggs as practiced by the Ukrainian people. Using a metal stylus which is heated in an open candle flame, thin layers of beeswax are applied to the egg shell before dipping it into brilliant liquid dyes. The wax protects the surface so that multiple colors can be applied. To finish, the wax is melted off to reveal a spectrum of color and pattern. The cultural meaning of traditional motifs will be explained and demonstrated but the focus of the class is on technique. Eggs and all other materials will be provided by the museum. Eggs will be available to take home the same day.
