Millinery Basics: Covered Buckram September 4 and 11, 1:00PM EST

Develop your millinery skills, or learn some new ones. Participants will gain an understanding of a traditional millinery foundation fabric, Buckram. Topics to be covered are: the basics of pattern making for a simple hat, adapting that pattern, cutting, wiring, covering with fabric and assembling the pieces. We will also discuss some ideas for lining and trimmings. Students can work along, or watch and complete the steps at leisure. They will work to finish the project after the class.

Paper Patterning: Learn the basics of hat patterning

The Instructor will provide a digital pattern PDF as a place to begin. Participants will learn the basic principles of adapting a pattern. They will use this pattern to make their hat.
Develop an understanding of how to achieve a desired shape using an inexpensive material, such as paper or lightweight cardboard.
Learn to use paper as a 3D mock-up to visualize the hat in space, before using the real materials
Buckram Hat

Learn how to cut, shape and wire your buckram shape to make a simple hat such as a pillbox
Assembly the wired pieces
Mull and Cover the hat with fashion fabric
Finishing techniques for the inside of the hat
Discuss decoration
6 hours over two Saturdays: September 4 and 11, 2021 / 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm
