Do you long to make jewelry with the items you love to collect, but struggle with how to do so? Many striking works of art jewelry incorporate found objects into the design. This weekend-long workshop will cover two different approaches to cold-connecting found objects for creating jewelry or small sculptural works: rivets and tabs. Day one will focus on a review of basic metalsmithing skills including sawing, piercing, filing, sanding, finishing, and patinas in addition to introducing students to several variations of rivets (raised, flush, tube, and standing). Day two will address texturing metal using the rolling mill, creating a frame with tabs for a found object and ‘setting’ the found object using tabs.
Students are encouraged to bring in materials from their own collections to work with and manipulate (nothing too precious). Be creative in what you collect and bring in a diverse array of objects that you don’t mind dissecting and working with.
This class is appropriate for beginners who are interested in learning basic bench skills, as well as for more intermediate jewelry students who want to push their technical skills and designs a bit further. Tools are available to use in the studio, but students are welcome to bring their own. Instructor: Kendall Reiss
