Introduction to Shibori and Indigo Workshop
(June 13)

June 13, 2020 @ 10:00 am - 4:30 pm

Experience the surface design technique of shibori, and create unique patterns on fabric using the natural dye indigo. Shibori, or physical resist, has been a traditional pattern-making technique in Japan, India, Africa throughout history, and continues today. We will begin experimenting with Japanese approaches such as Kumo (binding), Ori-Nui (stitching), Itajime (clamping) and Arashi (pole wrapping).

We will use these techniques, along with our own experiments to create our “bundles” and then place the cloth bundles in magical indigo dye. The possibilities are endless and surprises abound- all part of the fun!

Included will be a brief discussion of the history of Shibori and Indigo, plus demos and experimentation in the morning. After lunch, we will work to create a finished silk scarf to take with you, along with the small experiments from the morning. Please wear comfortable shoes and appropriate clothing for dyeing.
