Crafting a Collection: Fuller Craft Museum Recent Acquisitions

December 7, 2014 - July 12, 2015

Dirk Staschke, Bust, 1999, ceramic.

Crafting a Collection: Fuller Craft Museum Recent Acquisitions highlights significant new acquisitions made by Fuller Craft Museum from January 2012 through September 2014. In that time, the Museum has expanded its holdings in all craft-based media, representing a range of talented makers from the U.S. and abroad. This groundbreaking exhibition will shine a light on extraordinary craft objects acquired by the museum from 2012 to the present. A variety of media will be exhibited, including ceramic, glass, metal, wood, fiber, studio furniture, paper and jewelry.

Crafting a Collection features 70 objects from 55 artists working in glass, wood, clay, fiber, and metal. Many of the makers share overarching formal and thematic concerns—glaze creation and experimentation, trompe l’oeil elements, fiber weaving applications, and wood turning techniques, for example. Yet there also exists a range of novel approaches to working within the boundaries of the material, such as PVC manipulation, computational origami, and phosphorescence mineral paint inclusion. Whether traditional or experimental, process-driven or conceptual, all of the selected objects demonstrate a rigorous investigation of material possibilities and an undisputed commitment to craftsmanship. We are humbled by their profound beauty, and we are proud to share these enduring expressions with the community.
